New multi-terrain cargo trailer delivers increased payloads
to the frontline
GSV IPT’s three-tonne cargo trailer will enter into service
later this summer following the completion of a rigorous testing
regime. The trailer has a significantly increased payload
capability than its predecessor, the 1.75 cargo trailer, and
will carry a wide range of equipment and supplies to the
frontline, such as the first line water carriage system, the
field welding solution or two NATO pallets. The trailer will
predominantly be towed by the MAN Support Vehicle, but is also
compatible with all legacy prime movers. It operates in all
conditions and has improved off-road capability.
“The introduction into service of the three-tonne cargo trailer
is the result of extensive testing by our project assessment
team,” comments GSV IPT team leader Alison Henry. “We are
pleased to confirm that the new trailer meets the Improved
Medium Mobility classification and will compliment the
capability provided by the new MAN Support Vehicle.”
Testing of the trailer was carried out at multiple locations,
including Millbrook Proving Ground, CSS TDU, 11(Amphibious
Trials and Training) Sqn RM, DSTL Porton Down and QinetiQ
Boscombe Down.
The GSV IPT is currently procuring 500 new cargo trailers to
transport first line water, and a further 50 for its field
welding solution. BAE Systems has also procured a small number
for the Falcon communication system. The trailer was developed
by Universal Engineering Ltd, with specialist ILS support from
HR4 Ltd, which enabled the project to progress at a remarkable
rate.
“The new three-tonne trailer will allow for significantly
heavier payloads of equipment and supplies to be transported to
the frontline,” says Major Aled Evans. “The new trailer is a
valuable addition to our vehicle fleet and will remain in
service for 25 years.”
Members of GSV IPT responsible for the procurement and
management of heavy logistics vehicles will be at DVD on 25th
and 26th June at Millbrook. Visitors wishing to attend DVD must
pre-register by visiting
